MONSTER book review by Treyvon T.

Monster by Walter Dean Myers is a great book. I recommend that everyone of this generation read this book sometime in their life. By reading Monster you are getting glimpse into the life of a person on trial and how it affects their family and the people around them. Walter Dean Meyers also allows you to experience some of the discrimination faced by African-American men, in the United States Judicial system. I enjoyed reading this book because it’s not a conventional type of writing format of a book, it was written in screenplay format. Continue reading

STRANGER THAN FICTION movie review Hannah C.

Stranger Than Fiction, starring Will Ferrell as Harold crick and Emma Thompson as Karen Eiffel, is “a story about a man and his watch” Harold Crick bases his life off of numbers, his watch and Karen Eiffel, his narrator. “He’s not crazy he’s just written that way.” Is a statement that could not be more true, as Karen, his narrator is actually planning out and writing his life for the past 10 years.

What made this movie so appealing to me was that there were expressions of all different types of emotion throughout the movie. Including serious, sad, mad, funny, and confused. Throughout most of the movie Harold is lost and confused by this voice he is hearing. At one point he asks a fellow bus rider if she too can hear the voice he is hearing. She has no idea. Not only is Harold confused, but as a viewer over the course of the film, I got lost in what was happening. This is one of those movies that you really have to watch to truly understand everything, you have to catch every little detail. Continue reading

AVATAR movie review by Olivia J.

“Avatar has been described as a “game-changer,” and perhaps it is.” Says James Berardinelli. After being in over 10 years in the making, “Avatar”, has become the top grossing film of all time.. Directed by James Cameron, Avatar is about an ex-marine, Jake Sully, who is sent to an exotic planet inhabited with odd and creative creatures. Becoming a human mind in an alien body, he must choose between two different sides. Staying with the humans to take over the foreign planet, or help the ‘Na’vi’ species protect their home.

ANGELS AND DEMONS movie by Dylan R

             Angels and Demons

“the real star of the film is Rome, and its High Church gorgeousness, with lush cinematography by Salvatore Totino, who renders the real sky above the Vatican, in a cataclysmic event, with the detail and majesty of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.” –A.T. Hurley

Angels and Demons is the sequel to the Davinci Code. It begins with four cardinals from Rome who are kidnapped by an unknown person or persons. Tom Hanks who plays the main character Robert Langdon is sent to Rome to find the kidnapper who is trying to blow up Vatican City and kill the four cardinals. He follows clues that take him across Vatican City. The reason I think this was a good film are; the complicated plot, the suspense, and the main characters Robert Langdon and Vittoria Vetra, a scientist who helps Langdon to solve the mystery. SHERLOCK HOLMES movie review by Camila A.

”Raucous, rough energy infuses this film from start to finish, carrying us along even when the slightly over-egged script starts to feel somewhat slender. And it’s the terrific chemistry between Downey and Law that makes the film worth seeing,” says critic Rich Cline (Shadows on the Wall). And Rich Cline is correct. With the chemistry between Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, this film is a must see. Guy Richie’s interpretation of the infamous books by Arthur Conan Doyle was adequate as it did not exactly meet the standards of the original Sherlock Holmes we all now and grew up with. Yet, with the strong performance of the legendary Sherlock Holmes played out by Robert Downey Jr., this apocryphal detective is back on the case. The story starts off when Watson (Jude Law) is set off to marry, and the egotistical Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) becomes jealous. Luckily, when the evil Lord Blackwood has come back from the dead, this gives Sherlock a chance to lure Watson- who feigns grieving all the way- into another adventure.    Continue reading

WHAT MY GIRL FRIEND DOESN’T KNOW,book review by Allison D.

“…When people see us laughing together and holding hands, the room goes morgue quiet.” What my girlfriend doesn’t know, by Sonya Sones is and extraordinary story that shows you that even if you are truly in love with someone, there are others that can and will try to break up your relationship. Robin Murphy is dating Sophia Stein, which wouldn’t be such a big deal if Sophia wasn’t one of the most popular girls in school and Robin well isn’t at all popular.  Continue reading
